Earth Day at UF

Join Gators for a Sustainable Campus and over 25 student organizations to celebrate Earth Day on the Plaza of the Americas on Wednesday, April 22 from 10 to 3pm.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen will deliver his annual report on the State of Sustainability at UF at 10:30 a.m.

Following Machen’s speech, UF will honor faculty active in the field of sustainability as part of the university’s first sustainability recognition awards program.

Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan and City Commissioner and UF Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Jeanna Mastrodicasa will participate in a panel discussion from 1 to 2 p.m to assess the role of local governments in solving the climate crisis. Panelists will explore ways to accelerate the transition to clean energy while creating jobs and spurring investment in new industries.

Other activities at the Earth Day event include games, face painting, a plant giveaway and interactive opportunities to learn more about UF’s commitment to sustainability.

The Free Store will be present, along with a household hazardous materials roundup, so bring in clothes, books, and stuff to trade; and your PERSONAL e-waste to recycle (read the details). Also, Gainesville’s Direct Development International will collect textbooks which they will hand-deliver to schools in Belen, Peru and Entebbe, Uganda this summer.

Here's to the Long Haul

Join a GSC Campaign:

Renewable Energy Fee

The renewable energy referendum, which proposed a 50-cent per credit hour increase to tuition to fund renewable energy and efficiency on campus, passed with 78% of voting students in the spring 2007 student government election.

Bar Recycling

Have a hand in greening local bars by helping them to implement much-needed recycling programs.

Greening Local Schools

Parents at J.J. Finley Elementary were concerned about waste at the school, so they've asked for our help to develop a recycling plan and a more sustainable lunch program. The school hopes to serve as a model for other public schools in Alachua County.

The Green Team

The Green Team leads the Tail-Gator Recycling Program, a volunteer-oriented mission to provide recycling services to on- and off-campus tailgates at all home football games.

Consumption Reduction

Help us campaign to raise awareness about the impact our consumption habits have on the planet.

Sustainability Outreach

GSC gives campus-wide sustainability presentations that consist of a PowerPoint and Q & A, covering questions such as "What is sustainability?", "What are we doing to promote it?" and "What can I do to help?"
